African Women Council, Inc. (AWC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with both local and international missions. It was created in 2002 in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Our Mission

The mission of the African Women Council, Inc., is to build self-esteem in the African Immigrant women, to improve the livelihood of the African Immigrants, and to enhance their civic participation in Montgomery County.

Our Goals

The goals of the African Women Council, Inc., include contributing to the building of strong communities by educating immigrants about the American culture; disseminating information and communication about activities in our community; reducing the incidence of problems like domestic violence; and helping immigrants with job search skills and job placement.

Framework to enhance local civic participation in Montgomery County, State of Maryland

African Women Council, Inc initiated a program aimed at improving the livelihood of African immigrants in Montgomery County. This program involved:

1.        Information and communication activities

2.        Information, counseling, and assistance related to domestic violence

3.        A civic education program to encourage the involvement of African Immigrants in their communities, their neighborhood organizations, and local government

4.        Actions to create a dialogue with other ethnic groups in the community with the aim of sharing positive experience that enhance integration in the US.

5.        African Women Council, Inc  has been conducting small workshops and training programs for the communities in areas such as nutrition, intra-family violence, how to access social services and other areas identified by the community.

6.        AWC raised issues related to cultural identity, integration, immigration, the community socio-economic as well as health issues, services and other resources in our community.

Achievements

African Women Council, Inc. has conducted town hall meetings, conferences, and community awareness meetings to identify the issues in the community. This work has been made possible through the help of Montgomery County Government/Office of Community Partnership, contribution of its members, community and faith based organizations, our partner organizations, and grants from foundations, individuals, and corporations.

Currently African Women Council, Inc is working with the Montgomery County, Maryland, Office of the County Executive/Office of Community Partnership with the mission of mobilizing activities within the African Immigrants Community to create a service providers/service advocates network.
