Successive wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo have caused a lot of afflictions to the region in human terms: More than Six and a half million people have died both directly and indirectly from conflicts in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo alone over the past 14 years. According to the U.N “This is the highest death toll in any conflict since the end of World War II”. As a result, millions of children are now destitute orphans and millions of women became widows without any means of subsistence. Most of these women and children were already poor before the wars, now their livelihood has been shattered. However, if they are given
support, they can overcome the trauma and extreme deprivations, and begin a new life, looking with hope to a better future.

DONATE NOW
African Women Council Inc. is emerging as one of the foremost representatives of all who wish to help these women and children depart from war and poverty by providing them with means to acquire the capacity to build a better future for themselves and their communities.

Thus, AWC is convinced at this juncture that it is necessary to take basic education to these women and children. With basic education they will learn some skills that will allow them to earn a living independently and provide for the basic needs of their children, be useful to themselves and the community
AWC predicts that this approach will result among other things, in reducing dependency of these women on handouts (foreign aide) it will also promote among them an interest in economic productivity and provide them some measure of self-reliance.
